Breakfast in Brüggen

Finally, after a couple of months not travelling, I am so happy to have a week off. We decided to do a roundtrip in the car through Germany, France and Belgium. With a very specific theme; wine! Also, there is a first for everything. This time, I’m not the one making the planning, so this will be a complete surprise for me. And boy, did that happen, Sunday 8 am, on my way to our first destination; Brüggen, Germany.

I didn’t know, but there is a very nice tradition in Germany; Sunday brunch. A full breakfast with a table full of delicious and fresh treats. You can do this at home, but it truly is relaxation when you can do this in one of the cafés in Germany. We get in the car and start our roundtrip. After a three hour drive, we arrive in the city. We park at the (free) parking ‘Kreuzherrenplatz’. There are not a lot of cars yet, so there is enough places to pick from.

We are hungry so we quickly walk to our destination for our Sunday brunch; Burg Cafe Oomen. This café has its own bakery, so the bread they serve is really fresh. There are different items you can pick from to make your own breakfast, so anyone can find something they like. The employees are very friendly and the corona regulations are taken into account. This means; wear your mouth mask inside until you reach your table, then you can take it off. Also, the employees wear mouth masks. I would say that it’s very do-able when you know the regulations.

After the brunch, the city definitely lends itself for a walk. Outside you can go around without your moth mask, but take the two meters into account. There are not a lot of people on the street yet, so we can easily walk around without feeling crowded. We walk to the castle of Brüggen; Burg Brüggen. To reach this castle, we walk past an old wall. There isn’t much left and we continue to the castle.

Luckily for us, the castle is very much there and standing strong. This is the center of the city and is partially surrounded by a channel. It was build in the 13th century and it is still in use. At the moment, you can go inside and visit the hunting and natural history museum. The courtyard is used for cultural events, like concerts.

We walk through the gate and find our way back to the shopping street. You can really feel the history in this part of the city. There are already more people on the street and we decide to shorten our walk and return to our car. Via the Kosterstraße, we find our way back to the parking. In just a couple of hours, the parking is completely full. We get in the car and continue to our next destination; the Moselle.

You can definitely find more to do, inside the city and around. Around the city, there is a lot of nature, which invites you for nice walks. Also, the city offers different stores, restaurants, museums and holds different events. These events aren’t year-round, more information can be found on the website of the city; https://www.brueggen.de.
