Alongside the Moselle

Today, our time in Germany has come to an end and we will continue our road trip. The next leg; via Luxembourg to France. The destination of this day; Vandières. This is a small village near Pont-à-Mousson. Which is, very fittingly, located at the Moselle. In theory you can even stay at the Moselle for the whole leg, but then you would increase your kilometers tremendously.

This morning we decide to eat our breakfast at the hotel terrace. There are not that many people outside and we decide to enjoy the view before we hop in the car. After a quick check-out, we really have to start; our ride to France. We will drive via Schengen, located in Luxembourg. Luxembourg is known for its low gas prices by the surrounding countries, so we decide to profit from it. But before we reach Luxembourg, we have to drive through another part of Germany. The road quickly climbs and we see a different landscape then we’ve seen the last couple of days.

Via Trier we continue to the boarder of Luxembourg. Very quickly we are back to our well-known river; the Moselle. From the village of Wasserbillig, the Moselle is the natural border between Germany and Luxembourg. Although we were in Luxembourg for a short time, we cross the border again to Germany and continue our way next to the river to Schengen. The village of Schengen looks very deserted, even the tank station is practically empty. After a short lunch, we continue on our way to France. Near Thionville we are back on the highway, to have a quick drive to Pont-à-Mousson.

It doesn’t take long for us to reach the city. We park the car at Place Duroc and walk to one of the cafes to recover from the drive and drink a coffee. Here we notice that the corona measures are being followed as well. When you reach the terrace, you have to wear your mouth mask and you can take it off at the table. The square looks beautiful and there are not that many people on the streets.

After we finish our coffee, we decide to take a small walk through the city. Via the center we walk even further into the town to the Boulevard de Riolles. Here you can find a small but stretched out park which leads all the way back to the Moselle. Via the Moselle we walk back to the center but decide to make a short stop at a bench to enjoy the view. From our bench we see the Saint-Martin church and even further the Abby of the city. When we look the other way, we see some structure on the mountain which grabs our attention. After a small search on google maps, we found it; Chapelle de Lumière in the village Mousson.

We have some time before we can check-in, so we decide to visit this place. It’s around fifteen minutes by car from Pont-à-Mousson and is higher up the hills. When we arrive at the village, we park our car at the first parking we see and take a walk further up the hill. Again, this is quite the climb. But via some small steep paths up, we are finally there.

There are still some old walls visible. Old walls that used to be a castle; Château de Mousson. The view is truly beautiful. From this point you can see for miles and have a great view of the city Pont-à-Mousson. This is definitely worth the climb. After some time we decide to go back down to continue to our destination of the day; Vandières.

The road brings us back to the Moselle, via Pont-à-Mousson. We reach the village and come to the conclusion that we are too early. The hotel will only open at 6 o’clock for the check-in. Luckily for us, there is a café at the other side of the street that opens at 5, so we decide to go for a drink first. Fairly quickly it is time to check in at our hotel; Auberge Des Voyageurs. A friendly woman lets us enter the hotel and we have a very smooth check-in. It is possible to dine here, which we happily accept. We have driven enough for today. The staff tries its best to understand our terrible French and we can finally enjoy our delicious meal with a good glass of wine.
