Arriving at the Moselle
After three hours of driving, we are finally there; the Moselle. This river runs through three countries; France, Luxemburg and finishes in Germany. It is a famous wine area. This is one of the reasons that we are here. We drive to the village Bruttig-Fankel, directly on the Moselle. We stay here for two nights and then continue on our round trip.
When we arrive in the village, we see that there isn’t much to do here. That is exactly what we were looking for; tranquility. What this village has to offer is wine, a lot of wine. That is not very surprising, considering that this region has a lot of wine fields on both sides of the Moselle. Our accommodation also has its own wine. We stay at Weinhaus Hirschen. This is a neat hotel where all the hotel rooms have a view on the Moselle.
The check-in went very smooth. Inside of the hotel and at the check-in, we have to wear our mouth masks. But as soon as you are in your hotel room, you can take it off. It’s only two o’clock, so we decide to travel to a nearby village; Beilstein. This village is somewhat more busy than Bruttig-Fankel, what is quickly noticeable by all the tourists walking around in the area. I would categorize this village as ‘typical German’, with the characteristic houses you can find here.
The biggest touristic attraction in the area is Burg Metternich. This castle lies at a hilltop which gives amazing views over the Moselle. You have to be ready to climb a lot of stairs, but it is definitely worth it. The only disadvantage is that the stairs aren’t very wide, so it is hard to keep a distance when you want to pass people. Luckily for us, it isn’t that busy on the stairs and we reach the top quite fast.
To visit the castle, you have to pay an entrance fee. This is €2,50 for an adult at the moment we were there. At the entrance we have to wear our mouth mask but when we continue on, we can take it off again. We walk to the top and enjoy the view. When we want to continue to the courtyard of the castle, we have to put our masks back on.
In the courtyard you can find a terrace. We decide to stop for a drink. At the table, you can take of your mouth masks again. A cold drink at this terrace feels like a reward after the climb to the castle. Don’t forget to bring cash, because you can’t pay by card here.
After our short break, we take some more time to make photos. After the photo session, we return back to the village. Beilstein has a good ambiance and I would love to stay longer. Unfortunately, it has got even more crowded. Therefore, we decide to return to the car to do a small tour and find a restaurant for the evening.
We quickly come to the conclusion that we had to make some reservations in advance. The restaurants we visit are full and we have to think of something else. The city Cochem is nearby and we try to look for some food over there. Here, our luck turns. At Gaststätte Noss there is still some room left inside. No problem for us, we can finally have some food!
It is a typical German restaurant and the employees are very friendly. Here also the already well-known rules; inside you have to wear your mouth mask until you are seated at your table. The employees also wear them at all times. The food is delicious and we decide to go back to the hotel. Behind the hotel, they’ve set up their wine bar. There are plenty places to sit and they are all at least two meters apart to meet the corona regulations. For just €3 per glass, you can enjoy a big range of wine; red, rosé or white. This night, I’m going for the rosé!
