Heading to Luxembourg

Our previous vacation was almost a year ago, so it’s time for a new road trip: Luxembourg City, the Bodensee and the Königssee. We deliberately chose to avoid the highways and enjoy the picturesque country roads between the destinations. According to Google, the total route is approximately 2000 kilometers, which we want to do in the following 7 days.

We first drive to Valkenburg in the south of Limburg for lunch. As always, we go to La Casa. This restaurant with hotel rooms is situated right in the city center and serves delicious dishes. Valkenburg is a charming town that we have visited many times before. It is a popular destination due to its historical buildings, cozy cafes and restaurants, and the famous marl caves. After our lunch at La Casa, we get back in the car and continue driving towards Luxembourg.

We have enabled the “avoid highways” option and hit the road. The route from Valkenburg to Luxembourg City is beautiful, taking us through the narrow roads of Luxembourg. We pass by picturesque villages such as Clervaux and La Rochette, where we take a moment to pause and admire the surroundings. Just across the border, we also fill up the car with fuel since gasoline is much cheaper here than in the Netherlands. Always a nice bonus.

Once we arrive in the city, we head to our hotel first. We park at Parking R. P. Schuman, where we usually have to pay one euro per hour. Because this parking is conveniently located near our hotel, we find it worthwhile. After checking in, we take a leisurely stroll to the bustling city center. Along the way, we pass through a beautiful park where people are enjoying the lovely weather.

In the city center, we immerse ourselves in a blend of old and modern architecture. The narrow cobblestone streets, cozy squares, and historical buildings create a unique atmosphere. We wander through the streets and admire the stunning cathedral, the Notre-Dame of Luxembourg. The impressive structure with its Gothic details looks magnificent. We continue our walk to Gëlle Fra, an impressive war memorial with a panoramic view of the city.

In the heart of the city, there is a magnificent park nestled in a valley. We decide to cross the Adolfsbrug to the other side first and then return through the park. As we stroll through the park, we savor the tranquility and the lush green surroundings. The city center also offers countless opportunities for shopping, indulging in local delicacies, and relaxing at cozy terraces.

Luxembourg City effortlessly combines history, culture, and nature, making it a captivating destination. After a delightful dinner, we return to the hotel, ready for the next adventure towards Lake Constance. It has been an incredibly enjoyable first day, setting the tone for a fantastic vacation.
