Sailing back home

The borders are open! Well, in a way. There are a lot of countries still on ‘orange’ or ‘red’, which means that we can only visit just a couple of countries. The countries that are currently on ‘yellow’ are also a risk, if they’ll stay ‘yellow’ for the Netherlands. We’ll keep our spirits up and enjoy of one of our past holidays. This repositioning cruise on the Costa Magica in 2017 brings us from Italië via the west coast of Europe back ‘home’, to the Netherlands.

You can really relax when you arrive at your destination one day before the actual start of the cruise. Now you know for sure that you’ll reach the ship in time and don’t have to rush because of a delay on the flight. Just one night in the hotel in Milan and a morning transfer to the ship in Savona. After check-in, you have time to walk into the city, but you need to make sure that you are back in time before the departure, and most important, safety drill. After every passenger participated in the drill, the ship can sail away and the cruise can begin!

Early in the morning you arrive in Marseille. The ship will leave early in the afternoon, so you need to make sure that you will rise early and have a quick breakfast. The city has enough to offer; French fashion, museums, parcs or visit the palace. It is also very possible to chose your own path and loose your way in this beautiful city. Time flies by and before you know it, it’s time to go back to the ship. Ready for a day at sea!

picture

Finally, the day at sea! Time to sleep in, taking your time and discover the ship. Costa Magica has the facilities that you can expect from every cruise ship. There is a theater, shopping area, different bars, restaurants and on deck multiple swimming pools. The aft deck offers an adult-only area with swimming pool, great to enjoy some quite and peace. This aft deck also has a bar, although the personnel is always walking around to help you with your wishes. Plenty of stuff to do, but also definitely some time to do nothing.

After the day at sea, the ship arrives in Tangier. Looking from the city over the sea, you can see Spain. This Moroccan city has a lot of culture to offer. This also means that you have to dress properly, otherwise there is the possibility that the locals will tell you that you aren’t dressed properly. The ship is at walking distance of the city center. And before you know it, you are in the middle of the market. You could really get lost between all those shops. When you finally arrive the square ‘Grand Socco’, you can have a rest at one of the cafes and drink a world famous mint tea.

The ship leaves on time and sails to the Spanish city Cádiz. This city is surrounded by water. From the ship you’ll walk into the Monumento a la Constitución de 1812. From there you can follow the coast to have a beautiful walk over the boulevard. The boulevard offers a lot of shade and is very close by the city center. You only have to cross the road. You don’t have to hurry, there is enough time to go your own way. At Castillo de Santa Catalina you can make gorgeous pictures of the little ships that are in the water. Also, the cathedral is very impressive to see.

Lisbon, the capitol of Portugal and the next destination of this cruise. Here you really need to have a plan. The city is also considered a very good destination for a longer city trip. For the short-stay tourists, you can decide on the hop-on-hop-off bus and just decide on the spot where to hop-off. You can also just stick around for the whole round and continue to walk after. Also nice; tram 15, this will bring back nostalgic feelings. For sure, when the ship is ready to leave, you certainly aren’t.

The next destination is very famous by a drink; port. The most tasteful port? You’ll find that in Porto. Porto is, again, a very beautiful city on this route. This city has a lot of history. That’s not strange, considering the city exists since 300 before Christ. In the always sunny Porto you have plenty to do outdoors. But if it rains? Yes.. Then you can always visit the stadium of Porto; FC Porto.

picture

After a day at sea, the ship arrives in A Coruña. You’ll expect that Spain is sunny, but the rain followed us here. Therefore, it is good to also have a plan for a less sunny day. Then you don’t have to sit on the ship, crestfallen looking outside. Although it is also nice to be on the ship on a harbor day, very calm!

The ship is almost back at the end-destination, the Netherlands! But first we can enjoy Le Havre. This harbor city doesn’t have much to offer. Near the harbor is a shopping mall, but it is recommended to book an excursion at the cruise line. One of the excursions had a great description. Very creatively translated ‘booze and beach’. Topographically translated; Fécamp and Étretat. In Fécamp the tasteful drink Bénédictine is being brewed. After the tour you can have a taste of your own, assuming you’re over 18 years old.

picture

In Étretat you can enjoy the glorious cliffs at the coast. In the village you can do a short walk, but the cliffs are the real tourist attraction. After the excursions, the bus brings you back to the ship. Onto Zeebrugge. In Zeebrugge itself you can take the coastal tram to one of the other coastal towns of Belgium. Highly recommended. Wonderful for al Dutch speaking persons; you can speak Dutch. We are almost back in the Netherlands. Just one more night on the ship and you’ll arrive at your end-destination; Amsterdam.
