Stunning Königssee

With the memories of Luxembourg City and the Bodensee still fresh in our minds, we continue our journey to the next destination: the stunning Königssee. This lake, surrounded by the Bavarian Alps, is not only beautiful, but also harbors a unique secret. Did you know that the Königssee is the deepest lake in Germany, with some parts reaching a depth of 190 meters? We are very curious to explore!

Leaving the Bodensee behind, we make our way to the Alpenstrasse, choosing the scenic route over highways. This path may take a bit longer, but we prefer to see these beautiful surroundings instead of just other cars. As we approach our final destination, we decide to take a detour via the Chiemsee, stopping for a brief break. Rene’s Café near Seebruck provides the perfect stop, right by the lakeside. A great spot to recharge before we continue our journey to our day’s end: Berchtesgaden.

Upon our arrival, we check into our hotel, AlpinaRos. The hotel holds a splendid view of the Alps and is centrally located in the village. Parking was a bit nerve-wracking due to ongoing renovations and some unavailable spots. Inside, we receive a warm welcome from the staff. The hotel itself is quite neat, and we decide to stay here and drink a Helles.

The next morning, we rise early, eager to explore the Königssee. After a hearty breakfast, we hop into the car and head towards our destination. Arriving before 9, we are able to park nearby the village. The ferry terminal is also pleasantly uncrowded, allowing us to get a ticket and board the boat quickly. They have it well organized here, with at least 10 boats navigating the lake, ensuring minimal wait times.

On the boat, we receive an explanation in German about the lake and its surroundings. The boat makes a specific stop to demonstrate the lake’s echo. A tune played on a trumpet returns in three distinct echoes. It’s truly remarkable, though it’s crucial for everyone on the boat to remain silent during the performance.

We’ve purchased tickets that take us to the southernmost point of the Königssee. The rest of the passengers seem well-prepared, fully clothed in hiking gear, warm clothing, and backpacks filled with food and drinks. Meanwhile, we’re in shorts and sneakers. Consequently, at the southern tip, we simply relax, enjoying a drink before leisurely making our way back to the boat to continue the round trip.

If you’re a hiking enthusiast, this is truly a good place for you to be. You can purchase a one-way ticket to the southern tip and then hike back around the lake to the village. Preparation is advised, as the trails go straight through the Alps.

Back on the water, we nearly have the boat to ourselves. This means we can finally get the beautiful photos without anyone else in the frame. We decide to take the boat back to the village and embark on a leisurely drive through the Alps. It’s during this drive that we realize a highway vignette is needed. We make every effort to avoid the highway, opting for the smaller roads to Zell am See.

Zell am See itself appears deserted, clearly in the off-season. After a brief stroll, we opt to return to the hotel. The next day, after breakfast, it’s time to head back to the Netherlands. A stopover in Kassel brings us closer to our own home. Onward to the next road trip adventure!
